Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES): A Guide for Pakistani Travellers
Since 10 April 2026, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at the external borders of the Schengen countries. It replaces the passport stamp with a digital record of every entry and exit. Pakistani travellers need a Schengen visa as before, but when you land in Paris, Rome, Frankfurt or Madrid you now give fingerprints and a face photo at the border. The system then counts your 90 days in any 180 automatically. Here is what changes at the airport and what our Blue Area team now tells every Schengen client before they fly.
Carry these to the Schengen border under EES
All documents must be original or certified by the issuing department. Never submit forged papers.
Passport with a valid Schengen visa
The same passport you applied with. EES links your record to it.
Return or onward ticket
Border officers can still ask how and when you will leave.
Hotel bookings or invitation letter
Proof of where you are staying, matching what you declared in your visa application.
Travel medical insurance
The €30,000 minimum cover that your visa required, valid for the whole trip.
Proof of funds for the trip
A recent bank statement or card and cash, in case the officer asks how you will support yourself.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Get your Schengen visa as usual
EES does not replace the visa. Pakistani nationals still apply through the embassy or its visa centre in Pakistan.
First entry: register at the border
Your passport is scanned, your face photo is taken and, from age 12, your fingerprints. Some airports use self-service kiosks first.
Border interview
The officer may still ask about your purpose, stay and funds. Answer exactly as in your visa file.
Later crossings are quicker
On later entries and exits, the system checks your face or fingerprints against your stored record.
Exit on time
Your exit is recorded digitally. Overstays are detected automatically and can affect future visa applications.
What EES changes, and what it does not
EES is a border registration system, not a new visa. It replaces manual stamping and makes overstaying much harder to miss.
Processing Time & Consular Submission Centers in Pakistan
No pre-registration. Registration happens at your first border crossing and adds a few minutes on first entry
Timelines are based on typical consular adjudication schedules and may fluctuate during peak holiday windows.
Islamabad & Karachi Consular Facilities
Biometrics and physical passports are lodged at VFS Global Islamabad/Karachi or authorized Gerry's Visa Drop Box counters in Blue Area Islamabad.
